Welcoming new friends and volunteers

New friends are warmly invited to join the League of Friends of Sevenoaks Hospital. One of our key aims is to ensure that whenever possible people living locally can receive healthcare as close to home as possible.

Volunteers are also invaluable, helping both at the hospital and with events such as fêtes, stalls, concerts and flag days.

You can help by becoming a member or by making a donation. Or you can simply lend a hand in the refreshment bar. There is sure to be a rôle to suit your interests and to help the hospital.

Hospital to play vital rôle

Paving the way: The hospital’s new front                          Line up: Offical opening

The chairman of Sevenoaks League of Friends has stressed the vital rôle of Sevenoaks and other community hospitals during the changing National Health Service scenario.

Ian Philip was speaking at the League of Friends Annual General Meeting on June 7 (Read report: Pdf 32Kb). He said the opening of the new hospital at Pembury meant more beds were needed locally once patients were discharged from acute care.

As well as raising funds and providing equipment and other benefits to hospital and its patients, the Friends represented local people.

“Our aim is to try and ensure that their needs and wishes are being catered for by our local hospital services,” he stressed.

The highlight of the year was opening the newly re-furbished Minor injuries Unit in March. He said: I know the staff are delighted with their new environment and I have been told that the patients are most impressed with it.

“Hopefully, you will not have had to attend it, but you will have seen our magnificent new Minor Injuries Unit on your way in.”

Mark Shepherd, Interim Director of Operations for West Kent Community Health Trust, said that the aim was to provide as “broad range of services as close to the community as possible. “By treating locally you get people home quicker,” he said.

Two beds at Sevenoaks had been set aside for palliative care at the request of local Leagues of Friends and GPs and another two for stroke recovery patients.

Children’s and young people’s services are being located at the hospital.

The MIU is open 8am to 8pm every day, 365 days a year. The X-ray facility is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

*The League of Friends has just provided 13 new electric beds to enhance patient comfort.

Fund raising success

Fine sunny weather helped ensure the success of a bottle stand at the Riverhead Carnival on September 18. A total of £469.80 was raised plus £70 worth of Christmas cards were sold.

A recent street collection in Sevenoaks town centre raised £546.22 and another at Sainsbury, Otford Road brought in a further £533. So a big thank you to all our supporters!
